Super Bowl LiV

The recent Super Bowls have had awful logos, but someone finally noticed and fixed it for next year. Or maybe they got a new designer – one who cared about readability and meaning.

In case you’re not familiar with how they name Super Bowls, they use Roman numerals. Not sure why, but it’s their thing.

So Super Bowl 54 is really Super Bowl LIV. And here’s the logo:

image of the logo for Super Bowl LV 55

See how it has the L and the I and the V?

But that’s wrong – that’s actually the logo for Super Bowl LV.

You see, they like to put the image of the Lombardi trophy in the Super Bowl logo also, and it is mostly shaped like an “I”.

It would make sense for me if they did that on purpose, but they’re putting a thing that looks like an “I” where an “I” should be for Roman numerals, but they don’t want it to actually be an “I”.

That’s not how logos are supposed to work.

And here’s Super Bowl LIV, in case you’re wondering:

To me, that looks like Super Bowl LIIV. And that’s even worse because it’s not valid Roman numerals.

But, fret no more – they fixed it for Super Bowl LVI. Someone finally realized they shouldn’t have the numbers be the same size and color as the trophy if they didn’t want the trophy to actually be a number.

Different colors, overlapping instead of in line – no confusion. Much better. Give that new designer a raise.

In case you’re wondering, it’s been bad for the last few years. Super Bowl 50 and before were fine, but they used this bad style of logo for 51-55. I should have written about this before; I would have had an annual item going.

Side note: I am disappointed that Super Bowl LV was not held in Las Vegas.

Another side note: maybe it’s just the fact that they both prefer goatees and berets, but Bruce Arians and Jamie Hyneman remind me of each other.

Football Winner Guesser Results – 2020

It is time once again to update Some Blog Site readers on the results of my Some Fun Site project to create a more accurate football prediction method.
The 2020 NFL season is over, and here are the most accurate methods for predicting regular-season game results (wins-losses):

  • MPW: 68%
  • MPWHFA: 64%
  • ITP: 64%

Partway through the season, it was looking like the Home Field Advantage factor wasn’t helping the MPWHFA method much, but it came through at the end.

If you think you have a formula that can predict the winner of an NFL game better than 63.1% of the time, let me know and I’ll add it to the list.
(For the ideas behind the methods, please visit the Some Fun Site page.)

All-Haiku Bowl Results, 2020

Okay, okay, it is 2021 at this point, but the results are headlines as 2020 because they match with the 2020 predictions made in 2020 for the 2020 season. Also, the results are not all-haiku, just the predictions were. A more accurate title would be “Results for the All-Haiku Predictions made in 2020”.

Before the bowl games commenced for this past college football season, I made some predictions and some more predictions. Here, for your reading enjoyment, is the tally of those predictions. Note that the results are not in haiku form, in contrast to the predictions.

All-Haiku Bowl Predictions, 2020 Part 2

Based on the popularity existence of last year’s article predicting bowl games in haiku form, I present to you this year’s all-haiku bowl game predictions. Still America’s only all-haiku college football bowl game predictions.

These are listed in order of date (earliest first). Some picks are whom I think will win, and some picks are whom I want to win. I’ll leave it to you, the reader, to decide which is which.

Special note for this year of 2020: This is the updated post that contains all the bowl picks. I didn’t change the picks from earlier, even though those games have already been played. They’ll be counted in mid January with the rest of them, all at once.

All-Haiku Bowl Predictions, 2020 Part 1

Based on the popularity existence of last year’s article predicting bowl games in haiku form, I present to you this year’s all-haiku bowl game predictions. Still America’s only all-haiku college football bowl game predictions.

Special note for this year of 2020: I normally made predictions between the last game of the season and the first bowl game, as the selection committee has done its job and all bowl games have picked participants. However, this year the regular season is going later than usual due to late starts and postponements and such, so the first bowl game starts before many conferences have finished their seasons. I will provide the first round of picks this week, for the bowls that have finalized their teams. Then I’ll be providing the remaining picks next week, when everything else should be decided.

NFL in April, 2020

A few months ago, we had the announcement of the 2020 NFL schedule, but I forgot because I was distracted by world events. Now that we know who will play whom and when, we can start predicting wins and losses, just before the season starts.

I keep my predictions over at Some Fun Site. View results of previous football seasons.

2019 Summary

Last year, I predicted that

  • Atlanta Falcons = 5-11
  • Cleveland Browns = 8-8
  • Denver Broncos = 3-13
  • Jacksonville Jaguars = 16-0
  • Philadelphia Eagles = 11-5

How they actually did was

  • Atlanta Falcons = 7-9
  • Cleveland Browns = 6-10
  • Denver Broncos = 7-9
  • Jacksonville Jaguars = 6-10
  • Philadelphia Eagles = 9-7

Well, I got all the digits correct for the Jaguars, just not in the right order. For the other teams, I at least got winning season or not winning season right, for what that’s worth.

Into the Unknown

I wrote this song for Detroit Lions fans, but there’s nothing in it that’s particular to Detroit. You could change the subtitle and the logo and apply it to any sports team that is inept.

image of into the unknown Detroit lions edition song

That was not the whole song, but the ending part didn’t really have any changes. What else can you do with this:
Are you out there?
Do you know me?
Can you help me?
Can you show me?

Where are you going?
Don’t leave me alone
How do I follow you
Into the end zone?

Here are the full lyrics, in case you have trouble with the image:

I can hear you, but I won’t
Some strive for greatness, while others don’t
There’s a thousand reasons I should go about my game
And ignore your whispers which I wish would go away
oh oh oh

You’re not a coach
You’re just a ringing in my ear
And if I hear you – which I don’t – I’ve given up, I fear

Every game I’ve ever played is here within these walls
I’m sorry, winning season, but I’m blocking out your calls
I’ve had my big paycheck, I don’t need something new
I’m afraid of what I’m risking if I follow you
Into the unknown
Into the unknown
Into the end zone

What do you want?
‘Cause the defense’s hard to see
Are you here to distract me
So I cause a penalty
Or are you someone out there’s who’s a little bit like me?
Who knows deep down I’m not where I’m meant to be?

Every day’s a little harder as I count my losses grow
Don’t you know there’s part of me that longs to go
Into the end zone
Into the unknown
Into the end zone

Are you out there?
Do you know me?
Can you help me?
Can you show me?

Where are you going?
Don’t leave me alone
How do I follow you
Into the end zone?

So the abundance will be unknown in the land because of that subsequent famine; for it will be very severe.
