Icy Electricity

We were looking at a foreclosed home the other weekend (no, we’re not moving – we were just providing moral support for someone else who is). One of the main problems with foreclosed houses is that the former occupants are often disgruntled and take out their lack of gruntleness on the house itself. Sometimes by destroying things, something by taking whatever they can.
In this case, I’m not sure which case it was, but the end result is that there was no downspout for the gutter:
This would not normally cause too much of a problem, but you need the full view so you can see what was under the gutter:
Having dripping water on an electrical box shouldn’t be so bad, because they are outdoor enclosures and should be rated as such and therefore resist water intrusion. And at first glance you might think that’s the case:
But a closer inspection shows otherwise:
Why would someone in a northern climate leave an electrical box open in the middle of winter and directly under a dripping gutter?
At least it was only the telephone junction box. Still not a good situation, but not as bad as if that had been the main power to the house.
Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous;Do not destroy his resting place;

My guess is they didn’t like AT&T, so they decided to switch to that newfangled Voice over ICY phone service.

Not the best plan!
