Orcish Delight

In setting up a new page on Social Biblia, I had to provide profile photos for Midianite soldiers.
The Midianites were not exactly friendly people. The image that came to mind when I pictured unfriendly soldiers was the orcs from Warcraft. Not this fancy online World of Warcraft, but its grandfather – the old-school Warcraft II.
Back when games were games and ran on DOS.
Which was a problem because DOS-based games don’t like to run on Windows 7 laptops.
But I’m getting ahead of myself a little – let me rewind a bit.
I wanted to get images of orc soldiers from Warcraft 2. A Google image search for such did not return what I was picturing, so I figured I would run the game on my own computer and grab some screen shots.
I downloaded the demo version and tried to run it. Alas, my computer informed me that I could not run that old software on its newer OS. I did some investigating and found some software called DosBox. It lets you run old DOS games on newer operating systems. Perfect!
I installed that, followed the instructions, and was able to run Warcraft II on Windows 7.
Then I took some screen shots and erased out the background to isolate the orcs for the profile picture. I finished the task, but I thought it was a little much for just the images.
In order to save anyone else some time if he has a similar task, I am providing the screenshots here.
And if you don’t need the screenshots, allow yourself a small trip down memory lane.
And if you never played Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, then feel free to skip the rest of this post.
Bonus points if you thought “Who wants to sing?” to yourself while viewing the screenshots.
For it was when Israel had sown, that the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the sons of the east and go against them.
So they would camp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel as well as no sheep, ox, or donkey.

I miss that game. That and the original Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer: Red Alert. They were fun without being too complicated.

I read Gideon’s page first and was laughing out loud! Love it.
