Annual Hockey Game

Since Beta enjoyed last season’s hockey game so much, we scheduled another one for this year. We expanded and brought Gamma too.

This year’s event was a little more eventful than last year’s – overtime and shootout just like two years ago.

Traditions

It is our tradition that, during the first intermission, Beta gets a cup of hot chocolate. This year was no different, except I got Gamma a cup of hot chocolate too. Most of the second period was spent blowing on his hot chocolate so that it would be cool enough for him to drink.

I got a soft pretzel and shared it with the boys. That worked out well, much better than the overpriced almonds last year.

Another tradition is that we sit by the Zamboni entrance. That way the kids can watch closely as it drives by.

Recap of the Game

Here is the home team, preparing for the game:

And here are the opponents:

Just kidding – those kids are the intermission entertainment. More on that later.

Two seasons ago, the home team lost in a shootout. Last year, they won handily. This year, we were down for a while and had to pull the goalie to force overtime. Overtime came and went, ensuring that the kids would miss their bedtime by a wide margin, and we got a to watch a shootout. Our goalie let in the first shot. We had some chances to make it up, as the teams have a minimum number of turns for the shootout, but no one else scored so that was the game-losing goal.

Other

It turns out that not only is Harry Potter a hockey fan, but he was sitting right across the aisle from me:

There were a number of fundraisers or other such things during the game. The first one was teddy bears (or other stuffed animals):

Then there was the throw-fake-pucks-at-the-car-and-the-mascot game:

Then I glanced at the rink, just under the glass and saw this sign:

During one of the intermissions, the entertainment was that a local youth team got to play against the mascot. The mascot was the goalie, and the little guys took turns making shots on goal.

It was just the usual stuff until the section next to me started getting into it. Most of them were older youth hockey players, probably junior high-ish. They started chanting “Sieve! Sieve! Sieve!” at the mascot. Which was not true at all, since he was stopping most of the shots. I guess you’re just supposed to heckle no matter how well he’s playing.

A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.

Fun! Since Beta enjoyed watching a hockey game, I think G would enjoy one as well.
