All-Haiku Bowl Results, 2023

2024
Okay, okay, it is 2024 at this point, but the results are headlines as 2023 because they match with the 2023 predictions made in 2023 for the 2023 season. Also, the results are not all-haiku, just the predictions were. A more accurate title would be “Results for the All-Haiku Predictions made in 2023”.
Before the bowl games commenced for this past college football season, I made some predictions. Here, for your reading enjoyment, is the tally of those predictions. Note that the results are not in haiku form, in contrast to the predictions.

And here are the results of the various forecasting methodologies (see the first year for description of the methodologies) (also, use the word methodologies if you want to sound important; methods would work just as well and is shorter) :
- Some Blog Site picks were 25-17 (slightly worse than last year)
- CBS120 picks were 23-19 (slightly better than last year)
I don’t think it was right for teams that did not win their conferences to get into the playoffs, but such was 2023.
Conferences
Since the strength of the conference has something to do with the results, I thought I would tally each conference’s bowl game record for the 2023 (and the first bit of 2024) season. And it looks like a bunch of other places are pitting the conference records against each other too this year.
- AAC: 1-3
- ACC: 5-5
- Big 10: 6*-4
- Big 12: 5-3
- Independent: 1-1
- MAC: 2-4
- MW: 3-3
- PAC12: 5*-3
- SEC: 5-4
- Sun Belt: 5-5
- USA: 2-3
* additional win/loss due to playoff + championship game
So the best conference was a tie with the Big 12 and the PAC 12 (they won 63% of their bowl games) and the worst was the AAC (at 25%).
Overall it was fairly even across the board, most conferences were around 50% in the bowl games. Not that it really matters, because soon all the teams are going to be in the B1G or the SEC or the ACC.
I used to say the playoffs should just be the one best team from each conference, but with only 3 major conferences, that might need some re-working.
Next year: More playoffs! Fewer players in the non-playoff games! I expect to rank only the playoff games, as the regular bowls are too chaotic to do anything with. And the conference rankings might be re-done, as there’s a lot going on there too.
Behold, about this time tomorrow, I will send a very heavy hail, such as has not been seen in Egypt from the day it was founded until now.
