Cheese Pizza

There have been few “innovations” in the pizza realm over the years: cheese in the crust, cheese to the edge (i.e. no crust), etc.

The only place left for them to add cheese is on the bottom of the pizza. I haven’t seen that announcement yet, so I’m going to invent that here. All Around Cheese pizza. I don’t know that it’s going to be practical, but that can’t stop progress.

You may have some questions, like “Won’t the cheese melt off the pizza and drip onto the bottom of the over?” or “How would you hold it?”

Those are good questions, and I don’t have answers. I’ll let one of the big pizza companies figure it out. One of them must be desperate enough to try it.

Off-Brand Cereal Reviews

The cereal companies have their brands pretty well established. Everybody knows the brand names, and the kids are familiar with how they taste. In order to save money on the kids’ cereals (which is in order to spend that money on my fancy granola (Berries and Dark Chocolate Love Crunch)), I’ll buy store brands when it makes sense.

The store brands are always cheaper, but it doesn’t always make sense to buy them. If the kids don’t eat them, then it was a waste of money to buy them.

Brand Names that are …

Copied Well

  • Frosted Mini Wheats
  • Honey Bunches of Oats
  • Special K Red Berries

Copied Ok

  • Frosted Flakes
  • Cocoa Pebbles
  • Instant Oatmeal

Copied Poorly

  • Honey Nut Cheerios
  • Life
  • Lucky Charms

Your store brands may not align with this assessment, because I don’t know which stores you frequent. Mine are Kroger and Meijer.

Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.

Burger Direction

My kids were remarking that my wife had her burger upside down. I was doing the same thing (assembling my burger opposite of what the restaurants do), so I asked the kids what made more sense. Now I will do the same to the internet.

Say you need to carry something of not insignificant weight. Could be a book, or a cat, or whatever. And you have a sheet of paper and a sheet of corrugated cardboard. Which will do the job better? What about with more weight?

It never made sense to me why the half of the bun that is least suited for bearing weight is the one that people assign that task.

And if I get a restaurant burger, I don’t rearrange it. I just flip the whole thing over and eat it that way.

When Gideon came, behold, a man was relating a dream to his friend. And he said, “Behold, I had a dream; a loaf of barley bread was tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came to the tent and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down so that the tent lay flat.”

Chocolate for Breakfast, Part 3

My earlier post had been about some new chocolate (or chocolatey) cereals. We found another chocolate cereal that has joined the breakfast game: Love Crunch

Since it needs a longer name to make a good acronym, I’ll go with its full title of Love Crunch Dark Chocolate and Red Berries : LCDCaRB

It has a good taste but that comes at a price of nutrition. Or serving size. Take your pick. If you look at the nutrition information, it doesn’t look that bad compared to other cereals. It has more fat but less sodium. And since it’s granola, it should be the good kind of fat.

But…

the nutrition information is for a serving size of 1/4 cup. Go ahead and measure the amount of cereal you normally pour for yourself. Chances are good that it’s nowhere near 1/4 cup. A quarter cup is 4 tablespoons.

Anyway, this cereal is made with normal ingredients, so it tastes good. Especially the dark chocolate chunks.

Here is the nutrition information, normalized to the 3/4 serving size that other cereals use:

  • 18g of fat
  • 3g sat. fat
  • 165 mg sodium
  • 6g of fiber
  • 18g of sugar
  • 420 calories

I used to rank the cereals, with good taste and good nutrition at the top and bad taste and bad nutrition at the bottom. I couldn’t fit LCDCaRB anywhere in that list, so I gave up. Just enjoy the taste and ignore the calories.

Oh, and buy it on sale.

Throughout his life he also eats in darkness with great vexation, sickness and anger.

Good Orange Juice

This post might not be very exciting, but maybe it will help someone.

Our kids were drinking a fair bit of orange juice, due to the fact that we got a bunch of it from Costco. That was the orange juice that was ready to drink. But it ran out, and we didn’t have a Costco run planned anytime soon, so we got a can of orange juice concentrate from the normal grocery store.

The kids could tell the difference. It was name-brand orange juice even, but anything from the grocery store that was concentrated just didn’t have the same taste as the unconcentrated stuff. In fact, they wouldn’t even finish the pitcher of orange juice. So that fell to my dad duties of finishing food that the kids don’t in order not to waste any. I eventually, over the course of a few days, finished the orange juice. And I had to agree with them – the stuff from concentrate just doesn’t taste right.

Then my wife found this:

Doesn’t look like much, but it is OJ concentrate that actually tastes like the normal stuff. No bitterness or whatever. We can find this only at GFS, so good luck if you’re not near one of those.

Hmm… reading over my post, I see that it sounds like an advertisement. Oh well. It’s good stuff; I don’t mind giving them free publicity.

Daniel Plans

The Daniel Plan is a fairly successful diet to help people become healthier.

Physically.

But one’s physical body is only one aspect of oneself. What about mental health or emotional health or spiritual health?

Could we get Daniel Plans for those?

The Biblical Daniel plan, as opposed to the American Daniel Plan, was to eat only vegetables and drink only water, forgoing meat and wine (which would include today’s soft drinks, I assume).

To look at it another way, the Daniel meal plan is about eating what you need and what is good for you, not what you want and what pleases your taste buds.

If you take that concept and apply it to other areas, what would it look like?

Mental health – avoiding television? Limiting your playlist?

Emotional health – limiting your internet? being more selective in the books you choose?

Spiritual health – studying the Bible more? reading fewer blogs?

The only problem with the non-physical Daniel plan is that there is no good way to track progress. Physically, you can measure things: weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. But the health aspects that are not physical are more subjective.

Go ahead and try a 10-day detox, not just of foods that are bad for you, but also of media that are bad for you. Chances are good that whatever pleases God will also be healthier for you – body, soul, mind, and spirit.

But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, “Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
